This article discusses the development and findings made by the Chinese archaeologists in resolving some of the mysteries and controversies surrounding the enigmatic Song guan wares. Subsequently, mainly ru wares were used. Information regarding ru ware was not found in official sources. Our knowledge about ru wares was essentially gathered from excerpts of some writings by the ancient scholars. The word “jing shi” is ambiguous and can be interpreted differently. Others think it is not referring to Kaifeng but simply meant the imperial court.
No location of the kiln was specified. Two issues are therefore involved: If it is not kaifeng, is the location in Ruzhou where ru wares were made? And if in Ruzhou, is the guan ware actually still ru type wares? Finally, the centre of production of the Imperial Ru ware was found. The shard specimens match those extant ru wares in the Palace collection.
How to Determine the Age of Antique Furniture
Co of New Jersey Patented July 16 The familiar term Mason Jar came after its inventor, Mr. Mason, who, at age 26, was a tinsmith in New York City. He perfected a machine that could cut threads into lids, which ushered in the ability of manufacturing a jar with a reusable, screw-on, lid. These jars freed farm families from having to rely on pickle barrels, root cellars, and smoke houses to get through the winter. For urban families, Mason Jars allowed excess fruits and vegetables to be preserved for use later.

Well, you will be surprised to know that it is one of the very oldest games in the world. Pictured above are the most common type of Put and Takes. They were usually small, about an inch high, and made of brass. They can be distinguished from each other in a variety of ways, as is apparent on this page. These invariably have words like “put two” on the sides, not short-hand “P2”, “T1,” etc. I have never seen an 8-sided one with words on the sides, just T1, TA, P2, etc I find that the 6-sided ones are more common than the 8-sided ones.

Clock-watch[ edit ] The earliest dated watch known once belonged to Philip Melanchthon and is now in the Walters Art Museum , Baltimore The first timepieces to be worn, made in the 16th century beginning in the German cities of Nuremberg and Augsburg , were transitional in size between clocks and watches. Nuremberg clockmaker Peter Henlein or Henle or Hele is often credited as the inventor of the watch.
He shapes many-wheeled clocks out of small bits of iron, which run and chime the hours without weights for forty hours, whether carried at the breast or in a handbag However, other German clockmakers were creating miniature timepieces during this period, and there is no evidence Henlein was the first. They were heavy drum-shaped cylindrical brass boxes several inches in diameter, engraved and ornamented.
They had only an hour hand. The face was not covered with glass, but usually had a hinged brass cover, often decoratively pierced with grillwork so the time could be read without opening.

They are often complex, requiring many “moves” to open them. The puzzle is to find the secret compartment inside. To solve a puzzle box, one or more sliding parts in one end are moved, allowing the other end to be moved slightly. This partially unlocks a side panel, which allows other pieces to be moved. These, in turn, partially unlock the top or bottom. This method is continued, moving around the box, until the top panel can slide, opening the box.

Dovetails – A Clue for Dating Antiques by Ken Melchert Dovetail joints often hold two boards together in a box or drawer, almost like interlocking the fingertips of your hands. As the dovetail joint evolved through the last one hundred thirty years, it becomes a clue for the age and authenticity of antique furniture. The type of dovetailed joint, especially in drawers, reveals much about furniture construction and dating.
With just a little study of these examples, it is easy to spot true hand made construction vs. The earliest examples are from furniture placed with mummies in Egypt thousands of years ago, and also in the burials of ancient Chinese emperors.

A seafarers tale – an archaeological elucidation of a shipwreck By Sten Sjostrand Dreary weather and intermittent rain has led to a dramatic drop in temperature over the last few days and then, just as the rain finally stopped, a cold wind began to blow from the north. It whipped up high waves and enormous swells that broke repeatedly against the side of the ship giving the deck, and everyone on it, a good showering.
It was unbearably cold, wet and miserable.

Antique Cameras Antique Toy Fire Trucks and Collecting Fire Fighting Toys The gradual development during the 19th century of the modern day fire department was reflected in toys modeled after the trucks and vehicles used by the early volunteer fire fighting companies. Like the full-size versions, the first miniatures were rather crude. Fallow’s made a toy fire truck pumper of stenciled tinplate that was little more than two barrels joined at right angles — extremely simple and crude.
Early fire fighting toys by Brown and Ives were equally primitive. However, in the s more sophisticated cast-iron fire-fighting trucks and equipment appeared. Ives offered a matching set of 5 cast-iron fire vehicles — pumper, hose carriage, hook and ladder truck, fire patrol, and chief’s wagon. Horse-drawn fire-fighting toys continued to be made well after , although by then most communities had converted to collectible automotive vehicles. Thousands of types by dozens of makers exist, yet these were the last cast iron playthings to appear on the market.
They called “fire wagons”, the antique quality cast-iron versions ceased being manufactured in the early s. Also common were such highly specialized vehicles as antique fire engines and police cars, trolleys, motorcycles, racing cars, and even collectible sprinkler trucks for the city streets.
